Calling all JUNIORS - Want to go to NATIONALS in Vancouver this August? 

We are putting together a BOYS and a GIRLS team and I need to know if you are interested.  You would need to commit to play Regionals July 13 & 14, and NATIONALS August 12-15 (Note this is a Monday-Wednesday).

Costs invovled: $62 Tournament Fee, $30 Ultimate Canada Membership Fee, plus cost of hotel and travel.

You must be in High School to be eligible.

KUPS would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Josh Bernot, in regards to his untimely passing.  Josh was an integral part of our Ultimate community and he will be greatly missed. He was a great player, volunteer and leader. He was a huge contributor to our organization as an active board member and a willing participant in many KUPS events, whether organizing them or providing support. He was an incredibly positive person who represented the best parts of Ultimate Frisbee. Our love and thoughts go out to his family as they deal with this devastating loss. Josh will be remembered with great fondness by his Ultimate Frisbee Family.

Start of the season gentlemen!

Men's throwing practice starts Thursday 21st March, 2013, 530 pm to 630 pm at Parkinson by the Apple Bowl. Fields don't officially open till the 8th, but our BIGGEST weakness is throwing, you can be damn sure that this year will be more competitive and that a spot at nationals is not guaranteed.

Kelowna Ultimate is looking for nominations for the annual Steve Cox Legacy Award that looks to award an outstanding individual for their efforts in helping to promote and enrich Kelowna Ultimate and its leagues, teams, and members.  Nominations will be accepted until the end of March and can be sent to Josh Bernot at jbernot@gmail.com.  Further criteria for the award can be found below:

The Steve Cox Legacy Award was created in honour of the vision, hard work, spirit and perseverance shown to grow the Kelowna Ultimate Players Society, a league which is amazingly spirited, welcoming to new members, creates talented competitive teams, supports touring members, and enriches the physical and social lives of over 300 members.  The Steve Cox Legacy Award is to be awarded to one current or former KUPS member each year that shows or has shown a passion for the sport of ultimate and spreads this passion for the sport. 

Submission and Evaluation Process

Nomination submissions will be accepted in electronic form and should include the nominee name, a 250 word or less nomination letter and other supporting information (articles, clippings, etc.)  Nominations will be solicited until the end of March 2013 and can be sent to Josh Bernot at jbernot@gmail.com.  Nominations will be evaluated by an elected subcomittee.

Eligibility and Judging Criteria

Eligibility:

• All current or past members of KUPS are eligible;

Judging Criteria:

• This award should be given to members who have contributed to the advancement of both the spirit and sport of ultimate in Kelowna, who have a passion for the sport and share their passion with new members; 
• The recipient may have volunteered with KUPS in some capacity, but this is not a necessity; and,
• The judging process rewards spirit of the game over and above talent for the sport.

Sofa Kings meeting this Sunday before indoor at 8:00 at Boomers. the pub at Capital News Centre. All men interested in improving their Ultimate skills are invited. We will be discussing tournaments, practices and expectations for 2013.

Attention all High School-Aged Players: Juniors is starting up in April with games every Thursday at 6pm.  I've heard through the grapevine that KSS and OKM students have been practicing all winter long in the gym, so get ready for some seriously talented groups of players! All juniors-aged players are welcome to join in the fun and play! 

Tournaments:  

We are once again hosting a Juniors Division in our annual Sunflicker Tournament which is held Friday-Saturday, May 3-4, 2013. (The regular Adult tournament runs Sat-Sun, May 4-5). 

Calgary tournament (date TBA) - hopefully some of our local teams will be able to make this tournament.

Canadian Nationals - August 2013  - CDN Nats will be held in Vancouver. Last year our team had such an amazing time and we'd like to send another team.  There is a selection process for this team and the selected members will be asked to commit to playing Regionals as well as Nationals. Selections begin in June.

Our Juniors program is about to get up and running and we are asking the Ultimate community to donate their genlty used cleats.

Last year we had several High School players who were new to field sports and did not have cleats and/or could not afford cleats.  As most of you know, having cleats makes the game so much more enjoyable!  Especially since our Juniors league runs from April and May when the fields are damp and slippery, having cleats can make playing Ultimate a much better experience.
